Latex Paint
Residents can dispose of their Latex paint with the
rest of their garbage, as long as it's dry. But unlike other counties where
residents are told that they have to deal with the paint on their own, SWALCO
provides crushed corn cobs in bags as a relatively safe, fast, and inexpensive
solution to drying Latex paint.
Bags of crushed corn cobs are available in limited
quantities in the following locations:
Lake Zurich Department of Public Works, 505 Telser
Gurnee Village Hall, 325 N. O Plaine Rd.
Riverwoods Village Hall, 300 Portwine
Residents can pick up bags of crushed corn cobs at
their convenience and use it to solidify Latex paint. Equal parts of paint and
corn cobs can be mixed in the paint can and allowed to dry. Crushed corn cobs
are very absorbent, and can dry out a can of paint in as little as 30 minutes.
Once dry, the cans of paint can be disposed of with the rest of the resident's
refuse. Each five-pound bag dries 3-5 gallons of Latex paint.
After using the product, residents are encouraged to
give SWALCO their feedback via phone, email, or the postcards enclosed in the
bags. SWALCO staff will evaluate the program's effectiveness in the fall and
decide how to expand it, either through other municipalities, local businesses,
or a combination of both.
Residents can call the Solid Waste Agency of Lake
County at 847/336-9340 or email info@swalco.org
for more information about Latex paint disposal or the upcoming HCW collection
events. |
